I am an ENT surgeon from India, and I know the limitations of cochlear implants and even the best of hearing aids. I am yet to see SpeechSpecs. However, from what I understand about this from this site and Dr Massaro’s writings,it is a great idea put into action. The biggest advantage is the completion of “motor-sensory loop.” The hearing-impaired person gets feedback about his own articulation through which he can learn to speak. This will prove exceptionally helpful for the habilitation of children born deaf. Cochlear implants are out of reach of a large segment of population due to several factors-cost, need for surgery, the fear of having something artificial implanted, absence of cochlear nerve, etc. SpeechSpecs will change the world and I am keen on seeing this.
